Any idea what the tag was or where it spawned?

If you look online at BNSF train lists, you will see both ethanol trains listed under grain and unit oil trains. There are grain crops specifically grown for the production of ethanol, and I would guess that you are seeing ethanol grain being transported to various sea ports, as it would be easier and far less paperwork to transport ethanol grain, over a volatile and refined finished product of ethanol. So I do not believe what you were seeing is wrong.

The BNSF does run ethanol trains under the "G" symbols. It just depends on service demands and how local management decides to symbol the train. For instance the unit ethanol train that leaves Galva, Illinois and runs to Birmingham, AL often times runs as a G-GLVBIR and back as a X-BIRGLV.
